Als iemand de wereld liefheeft
is de liefde van de Vader niet in hem.
Want al wat in de wereld is
– het begeren van de lust
en het begeren der ogen
en de hovaardij van het geld –
het komt niet van de Vader,
maar van de wereld.
En die wereld gaat voorbij
met heel haar begeerlijkheid,
maar wie de wil doet van God
blijft in eeuwigheid.

Vrienden, hoe weten wij dat wij God kennen?
Er is maar één bewijs:
dat we ons houden aan zijn geboden.
Wie zegt dat hij Hem kent,
maar zich niet stoort aan zijn geboden
is een leugenaar;
in zo iemand woont de waarheid niet.
Maar in een mens, die gehoorzaam is aan Gods woord,
heeft zijn liefde werkelijk haar volmaaktheid bereikt;
dan weten we zeker dat we ‘in Hem’ zijn.
Wie aanspraak maakt op verbondenheid met God,
moet leven juist zoals Christus geleefd heeft.
Vrienden,
ik leg u geen nieuw gebod op.
Het is het oude gebod, dat gij altijd gehad hebt;
het is de boodschap, die gij vanaf het begin hebt gehoord.
Toch is het ook weer een nieuw gebod
en dat geldt van Christus, maar ook van u:
want de duisternis gaat voorbij
en het waarachtige licht schijnt reeds.
Wie zegt in het licht te zijn, maar zijn broeder haat,
die is nog steeds in duisternis.
Wie zijn broeder liefheeft,
blijft in het licht
en hij komt niet ten val.
Maar wie zijn broeder haat
is in duisternis.
Hij tast in het donker
en hij weet niet waarheen zijn weg hem voert,
want de duisternis heeft hem blind gemaakt.

Broeders en zusters,
Bekleedt u als Gods heilige en geliefde uitverkorenen
met tedere ontferming, goedheid, deemoed,
zachtheid en geduld.
Verdraagt elkander
en vergeeft elkander,
als de een tegen de ander een grief heeft.
Zoals de Heer u vergeven heeft,
zo moet ook gij vergeven.
Voegt bij dit alles de liefde als de band der volmaaktheid.
En laat de vrede van Christus heersen in uw hart;
daartoe zijt gij immers geroepen,
als leden van één lichaam.
En weest dankbaar.
Het woord van Christus
moge in volle rijkdom onder u wonen.
Leert en vermaant elkander met alle wijsheid.
Zingt voor God met een dankbaar hart psalmen,

het bestond vanaf het begin
– we hebben het gehoord en met eigen ogen gezien;
we hebben het aanschouwd
en onze handen hebben het aangeraakt –
dáárover spreken wij:
over het Woord dat leven is.
Want het leven is verschenen;
het eeuwige leven dat bij de Vader was
heeft zich aan ons getoond:

In die dagen deed Stefanus, vol genade en kracht,
grote wondertekenen onder het volk.
Sommige leden echter
van de zogenaamde synagoge der Vrijgelatenen,
Cyreneeërs en Alexandrijnen
en sommige mensen uit Cilicië en Asia
begonnen met Stefanus te redetwisten,
maar zij konden niet op tegen de wijsheid
en tegen de geest waarmee hij sprak.
Ze werden woedend
en ze knarsetandden tegen hem.
Maar Stefanus, vervuld van de heilige Geest,
staarde naar de hemel en zag Gods heerlijkheid
en Jezus, staande aan Gods rechterhand;
en hij riep uit:
“Ik zie de hemel open
en de Mensenzoon staande aan Gods rechterhand.”
Maar zij begonnen luidkeels te schreeuwen,
stopten hun oren toe
en stormden als één man op hem af.
Zij sleepten hem buiten de poort en stenigden hem.
De getuigen legden hun mantels neer
aan de voeten van een jongeman, die Saulus heette.
Terwijl zij Stefanus stenigden,
bad hij: “Heer Jezus, ontvang mijn geest.”
Toen viel hij op zijn knieën en riep met luide stem:
“Heer, reken hun deze zonde niet aan.”
Na deze woorden ontsliep hij.

Broeders en zusters,
nadat God eertijds
vele malen en op velerlei wijzen
tot onze vaderen gesproken had door de profeten,
heeft Hij nu, op het einde der tijden,
tot ons gesproken tot de Zoon,
die Hij erfgenaam gemaakt heeft van al wat bestaat
en door wie Hij het heelal heeft geschapen.
Hij is de afstraling van Gods heerlijkheid
en het evenbeeld van zijn wezen.
Hij houdt alles in stand door zijn machtig woord.
En na de reiniging der zonden te hebben voltrokken,
heeft Hij
zich neergezet ter rechterzijde van de majesteit in den hoge,
ver verheven boven de engelen,
zoals Hij hen ook overtreft
in de waardigheid, die zijn deel is geworden.
Heeft God ooit tot een engel gezegd:
“Gij zijt mijn Zoon;
Ik heb u heden verwekt?” Of:
“Ik zal een Vader voor hem zijn en Hij zal mijn zoon zijn?”
Wanneer Hij evenwel
de Eerstgeborene opnieuw de wereld binnenleidt zegt Hij:
“Alle engelen Gods moeten Hem hulde brengen.”

Gij hebt hun blijdschap vermeerderd,
hun vreugde vergroot.
Voor uw aanschijn zijn zij vrolijk
als mensen, die opgewekt zijn bij de oogst,
of jubelen bij het verdelen van de buit.
Want het juk dat zwaar op hem drukt,
het blok dat ligt op zijn nek,
en de stok van zijn drijver,
hebt gij stuk gebroken als in de dagen van Midjan.

Zo spreekt de Heer God:
“Ik zend mijn gezant voor Mij uit
om voor Mij de weg te banen.
En aanstonds treedt dan de Heer zijn heiligdom binnen,
de Heer, die gij zoekt, de engel van het verbond,
naar wie gij verlangend uitziet.
Let op, Hij komt, zegt de Heer der legerscharen.
Maar wie kan de dag van zijn komst verdragen?
Wie zal er staande blijven wanneer Hij verschijnt?
Want Hij is als het vuur van de smelter,
als het loog van de blekers.
Hij zet zich neer om het zilver te smelten en te zuiveren,
om de levieten te zuiveren en hen, als goud en zilver, te louteren,
zodat zij de Heer weer op de vereiste wijze
offergaven kunnen brengen.
Dan zal het offer van Juda en Jeruzalem de Heer weer behagen,
zoals in het verleden, in de voorbije jaren.
Zie, Ik zal u de profeet Elia zenden
voordat de grote en schrikkelijke dag van de Heer komt.
Hij zal het hart van de vaders voor de kinderen winnen
en het hart van de kinderen voor de vaders;
zo niet, dan kom Ik het land met de banvloek slaan.”

met een driejarige stier, een efa meel en een zak wijn.
Zij bracht de jongen, zo klein als hij was,
naar de tempel van de Heer in Silo.
Zij slachtten de stier en brachten de jongen naar Eli.
Daarbij zei Hanna:
“Met uw verlof, mijn heer, zo waar u leeft, mijn heer,
ik ben de vrouw, die hier gestaan heeft
om tot de Heer te bidden, in uw tegenwoordigheid.
Om deze jongen heb ik gebeden
en de Heer heeft mij gegeven wat ik van Hem heb afgesmeekt.
Daarom sta ik hem aan de Heer af.
Zolang hij leeft, blijft hij de Heer afgestaan.”
En zij bogen zich daar voor God de Heer neer.

Begin van de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Rome.
Van Paulus, dienstknecht van Christus Jezus,
door Gods roeping apostel,
bestemd voor de dienst van het evangelie,
dat God eertijds door zijn profeten
in de heilige geschriften heeft aangekondigd.
Het is de boodschap over zijn Zoon,
die naar het vlees geboren is uit het geslacht van David,
die naar de heilige Geest
is aangewezen als Zoon van God
door Gods machtige daad,
door zijn opstanding uit de doden,
Jezus Christus onze Heer.
Door Hem heb ik de genade van het apostelschap ontvangen,
om ter ere van zijn Naam
onder alle volken
mensen te brengen tot de gehoorzaamheid van het geloof.
Ook gij hoort bij hen, geroepen als gij zijt door God
tot de gemeenschap van Jezus Christus.
Ik zend mijn groeten aan u allen in Rome:
God heeft u lief
en riep u tot zijn heilige gemeente.

Maar Achaz antwoordde: “Ik vraag niet om een teken,
ik wil de Heer niet op de proef stellen.”
En Jesaja sprak: “Luister dan, Huis van David,
is het u niet genoeg mensen te ergeren,
dat gij ook mijn God tot ergernis wilt zijn?
Daarom geeft de Heer u ook ongevraagd een teken:
Zie, de jonge vrouw zal ontvangen en een zoon baren,
en zij zal hem noemen ‘Immanuël’, ‘God-met-ons’.”

In die tijd
woonde er in Sora een Daniet die Manoach heette.
Zijn vrouw was onvruchtbaar en had nooit kinderen gekregen.
De engel van de Heer verscheen aan die vrouw en zei:
“Gij zijt altijd onvruchtbaar geweest
en hebt nooit een kind gekregen,
maar nu zult gij zwanger worden
en een zoon ter wereld brengen.
Zorg dat gij geen wijn of sterke drank drinkt
en niets eet dat onrein is.
Gij zult zwanger worden en een zoon ter wereld brengen.
Over het hoofd van de jongen mag geen scheermes gaan,
omdat hij vanaf de schoot van zijn moeder aan God is gewijd.
De bevrijding van Israël uit de macht van de Filistijnen
zal met hem beginnen.”
De vrouw ging dit aan haar man vertellen en zei:
“Er is een man Gods bij mij geweest;
hij zag er buitengewoon indrukwekkend uit,
als een engel van God.
Ik heb hem niet durven vragen waar hij vandaan kwam,
en hij heeft mij zijn naam niet genoemd.
Hij zei tegen mij:
Gij zult zwanger worden en een zoon ter wereld brengen.
Van nu af moogt gij geen wijn of sterke drank drinken
en niets eten dat onrein maakt;
want de jongen zal aan God gewijd zijn
vanaf de schoot van zijn moeder tot aan zijn dood.”
De vrouw bracht een zoon ter wereld en noemde hem Simson.
De jongen groeide op, en de Heer zegende hem.
En de geest des Heren bewoog hem voor het eerst.

Wee de weerspannige, bezoedelde, gewelddadige stad! Zij luistert naar geen vermaning, zij wil van geen onderrichting weten, zij vertrouwt niet op de Heer en nadert niet tot haar God. Ik zal aan de volken andere, reine lippen geven. Dan zullen zij allen de naam van de Heer aanroepen en eensgezind Hem dienen. Van over de rivieren van Ethiopië, waarheen zij verstrooid zijn, brengen zij Mij hun offers, degenen die Mij aanbidden. Dan wordt onder u geen misdaad tegen Mij meer begaan waarover gij u hebt te schamen, want Ik verwijder dan uit uw midden de hoogmoedige pronkers; op mijn heilige berg zult gij u niet langer misdragen. Ik laat bij u alleen nog over een nederig, bescheiden volk, dat zijn toevlucht vindt bij de naam van de Heer: de rest van Israël. Zij bedrijven geen onrecht meer, zij vertellen niet langer leugens en in hun mond is geen arglistige tong meer te vinden. Zij zullen weiden en rustig neerliggen zonder dat hen nog iemand opschrikt.
