Vrienden,
ons vertrouwen op God geeft ons de zekerheid,
dat Hij naar ons luistert
als wij Hem iets vragen overeenkomstig zijn wil.
En als wij weten, dat Hij naar al ons vragen luistert,
mogen wij er ook zeker van zijn,
dat onze gebeden al zijn verhoord.
Als iemand zijn broeder een zonde ziet bedrijven,
die niet voert tot de dood,
moet hij voor zijn broeder bidden
en God zal hem in leven houden, dat wil zeggen,
als zijn zonde hem niet doodt.
Want er is een zonde, die voert tot de dood;
hiervoor geldt mijn aansporing om te bidden niet.
Maar hoewel elke verkeerde daad zonde is,
brengt niet elke zonde de dood.
Wij weten, dat een kind van God niet zondigt;
de Zoon van God behoedt hem
en de boze heeft geen vat op hem.
Wij weten, dat wij bij God horen,
terwijl de hele wereld in de macht van de boze ligt.
Wij weten, dat de Zoon van God gekomen is
en dat Hij ons inzicht gegeven heeft
om de waarachtige God te kennen,
en wij zijn in de waarachtige God,
want wij zijn in Jezus Christus, zijn Zoon.
Dit is de ware God, dit is eeuwig leven!
Kinderen, wacht u voor valse goden.

Vrienden,
niemand kan de wereld overwinnen, dan hij die gelooft
dat Jezus de Zoon van God is.
Hij is het die gekomen is met water en bloed,
Jezus Christus.
Hij is gekomen
niet door water alleen, maar door water en door bloed.
De Geest betuigt het,
omdat de Geest de waarheid is.
Want er zijn drie getuigen,
de Geest,
het water
en het bloed
en deze drie stemmen overeen.
Als wij het getuigenis van mensen aannemen,
dan zeker dat van God,
dat zoveel groter gezag heeft; God zelf waarborgt dit getuigenis,
dat Hij heeft afgelegd aangaande zijn Zoon.
Wie in de Zoon van God gelooft,
draagt Gods getuigenis in zijn hart.
Wie God geen geloof schenkt,
maakt Hem tot een leugenaar, want hij weigert
Gods eigen getuigenis over zijn Zoon te aanvaarden.
En dit is de zin van het getuigenis:
God heeft ons eeuwig leven gegeven in zijn Zoon.
Wie de Zoon heeft,
heeft leven gevonden;
wie de Zoon van God niet heeft,
heeft ook het leven niet.
Ik heb u deze brief geschreven
om u er van te overtuigen, dat gij eeuwig leven hebt,
gij allen die waarachtig gelooft in de Zoon van God.

Vrienden,
wij hebben lief, omdat God ons het eerst heeft liefgehad.
Maar als iemand zegt, dat hij God liefheeft,
terwijl hij zijn broeder haat,
is hij een leugenaar.
Want als hij zijn broeder die hij ziet niet liefheeft,
kan hij niet God liefhebben,
die hij nooit heeft gezien.
Dit gebod hebben wij dan ook van Hem gekregen:
wie God liefheeft
moet ook zijn broeder liefhebben.
Iedereen die gelooft dat Jezus de verlosser is,
is een kind van God.
Welnu, wie de vader liefheeft,
bemint ook het kind.
Willen wij God liefhebben en zijn geboden onderhouden,
dan moeten wij ook Gods kinderen liefhebben.
Dat is onze maatstaf.
God beminnen wil zeggen
zijn geboden onderhouden,
en zijn geboden zijn niet moeilijk te onderhouden,
want ieder die uit God geboren is
overwint de wereld.
En het wapen waarmee wij de wereld overwinnen
is geen ander dan ons geloof.
